The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah claimed responsibility for a cross-border drone and missile attack in northern Israel on Wednesday that emergency officials said had injured at least 13 people, four of them critically. Clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, Iran’s most powerful regional proxy, have intensified in the wake of Israel’s targeted killing of two Hezbollah commanders. And there are growing fears of a broader conflict between Israel and Tehran, which mounted a wide aerial attack on Israel over the weekend. Hezbollah said its attack on an Israeli Bedouin border village, Arab al-Aramshe, was in response to the Israeli airstrikes a day earlier which Israel’s military said had killed the commanders. Those strikes triggered a series of retaliatory attacks by Hezbollah on Israeli military bases and barracks.

Kindergarten was in full swing for 30 children from Arab al-Aramshe, a village next to Israel’s border with Lebanon. It is a logistically complex and costly operation for the Israeli state, which is paying to house the evacuees indefinitely in 280 hotels and guesthouses scattered across the country. In the south, where many of the evacuees survived the Hamas attacks, it has recruited specialists to offer trauma counseling. Hunched over a laptop at the bar, Adeeb Mazal, Arab al-Aramshe’s community manager, tried to keep track of his vagabond villagers. And he worried about their mental health, with the idleness nourishing their fears about Hezbollah.

Israeli forces exchanged fire with Lebanon’s Hezbollah for a fourth consecutive day on Wednesday, dialing up fears that a second front could open up in the war if the Shiite Hezbollah movement chooses to enter the fray. The Israeli military said an antitank missile from Lebanon was launched toward a military post near the village of Arab Al-Aramshe along the Lebanese border on Wednesday morning. Israel said it struck in Lebanese territory in response. Hezbollah said it fired a missile at an Israeli military vehicle in retaliation for an Israeli attack that killed three members of the group on Monday. An Israeli military officer was also killed in the clashes.
